The City of Hattiesburg is set to get its first all-inclusive playground! This playground comes as part of the Midtown Green Inclusive Park that the city has been making plans for since 2020. Read on for all the details we know about this new development.
About Midtown Green Inclusive Park
In April 2023, the Hattiesburg City Council approved a bid of $1.2 million for the construction of Midtown Green, an all-inclusive park. The Pine Belt Foundation and the Payne Foundation have partnered to fund this endeavor.
This project will transform a 4.2-acre plot across from the University Baptist Church near Arlington Loop. It will feature a quarter-mile track, a pavilion and the city’s first ever inclusive playground.
In order to create Midtown Green Inclusive Park, there will be wheelchair-accessible fixtures and grass throughout. These fixtures will include a we-go-round wheelchair-accessible spinner, a ramp with a roller slide, a 21-foot super netplex with a spiral belt climber and more!
“It’s just a huge thing for our community,” said Pine Belt Foundation Executive Director Michael Dixon. “As you know, children learn through play, through interacting with their friends, and a lot of the times, playgrounds are where a lot of kids don’t have access to that kind of learning.”
More about Midtown Green Inclusive Park
Over the past few years, the District at Midtown in Hattiesburg has continued to expand. From new restaurants and gyms to the new Midtown Green Inclusive Park, it is no wonder people are drawn to this area.
Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker also announced that the city will be conducting a drainage project near the park so there are no adverse effects on the neighborhood. “It’s exciting to see all the new stuff happening in the Midtown area; it’s a real draw not just for the city, but those outside of the city,” Mayor Barker told reporters.
The groundbreaking for this project took place on June 8th.
